AIDS
AIDS is an acronym that stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is believed to have been spread from a chimpanzee. The first man in Kenya was diagnosed to have Aids in the year 1982. It’s actually the deadliest disease in history currently, killing an average of 350 Kenyans a day. This is a great improvement because it used to kill more than 600 people a day between the years 1998 and 2001.
AIDS can be spread through several ways. These are:
Sexual intercourse with an infected person.
Through sharp objects like needles, syringes.
Through blood transfusion.
From pregnant mother to unborn child.
How AIDS affects the body:
It lowers the immunity of the body thus making the body easy to be infected by diseases.
The infected person usually grows weaker and thinner after an incubation period of 6 months.
AIDS also affects the mental progress of a human being : he/she will always be thinking of death thus reducing his/her chances of fighting against the disease. It also affects his/her effectiveness in working which may lead to deteriorating of the economy of his/her family and the society.
Ways to prevent acquiring AIDS virus :
Faithfulness of partners, one should stick to the one and true partner.
Promoting the use and availability of condoms.
Controlling other sexually transmitted diseases.
Promoting abstinence before marriage.
Mother to child transmission.
